What is the purpose of ‘evolved Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (eLISA)’ project?
Show answer
Answer: B. To detect gravitational waves
Verdict
The answer is to detect gravitational waves. eLISA is a space based gravitational wave observatory.
Analysis
The evolved Laser Interferometer Space Antenna plans three spacecraft, a mother and two daughters, flying in triangular formation and trailing the Earth in its orbit around the Sun at a separation of millions of kilometres. Laser interferometers measure minute changes in the distance between test masses in those spacecraft, and a passing gravitational wave produces exactly such a change. Neutrino detection requires large volumes of dense matter rather than interferometry, and neither missile defence nor solar flare research uses this architecture.

How to crack it
The word interferometer is the whole clue, since interferometry measures extremely small changes in distance, and the only phenomenon on the list that manifests as a change in distance is a gravitational wave stretching and squeezing space. Pair eLISA with LIGO in your notes, one in space and one on the ground, because the 2015 detection and its Nobel recognition kept this topic live for several years.
