UPSC Prelims 2022 question on System of Rice Intensification

"System of Rice Intensification" of cultivation, in which alternate wetting and drying of rice fields is practised, results in:

1. Reduced seed requirement

2. Reduced methane production

3. Reduced electricity consumption

Select the correct answer using the code given below:

  1. 1 and 2 only
  2. 2 and 3 only
  3. 1 and 3 only
  4. 1, 2 and 3
Show answer

Answer: D. 1, 2 and 3

Verdict

Correct statements: 1, 2 and 3 → Option (d).

Statement by statement

Statement 1 – CORRECT: Under SRI, 2 kg seed is required to grow a nursery for one acre against 5 kg seed required in the traditional method. Hence seed requirement is significantly reduced.

Statement 2 – CORRECT: SRI is a holistic approach to sustainable rice cultivation. By minimizing water use and alternating wet and dry conditions, it minimizes methane production (anaerobic decomposition of organic matter in flooded fields produces methane).

Statement 3 – CORRECT: With less consumption of water, adoption of SRI saves total energy inputs. A study found in Vietnam has also proved that applying SRI methods can save around 23% of energy inputs, while increasing energy outputs by 11%.
