- SubjectEnvironment and Ecology
- TopicMiscellaneous Environment and Ecology
- DifficultyEasy
- TypeAssertion
Consider the following statements:
Statement I:
Circular economy reduces the emissions of greenhouse gases.
Statement II:
Circular economy reduces the use of raw materials as inputs.
Statement III:
Circular economy reduces wastage in the production process.
Which one of the following is correct in respect of the above statements?
Show answer
Answer: A. Both Statement II and Statement III are correct and both of them explain Statement I
Analysis
Both Statement II and Statement III are correct and both explain Statement I → Option (a).
Statement by statement
Statement I – CORRECT: Circular economy strategies (like recycling, reuse, repair) reduce emissions by lowering energy use and avoiding emissions from raw material extraction and waste management.
Statement II – CORRECT: A key aim of the circular economy is to retain the value of products and materials in use for as long as possible. This reduces the demand for virgin materials and the GHGs emitted during their extraction and processing. Additionally, the energy-intensive parts of the circular economy should be powered by renewable energy. Hence Statement II is correct and explains Statement I by showing how reduced raw material use cuts GHG emissions.
Statement III – CORRECT: Circular models aim to design out waste, improving efficiency. The reuse and recycling of materials directly cut down the need for virgin/raw materials. Hence Statement III is correct and also explains Statement I by showing how reduced wastage reduces emissions associated with disposal and production.
