Show answer

Answer: C. 3 and 4

Verdict

The answer is 3 and 4. The Maadeo Hills are in central India and the Mikir Hills are in the North-East, while the first two pairs are wrong.

Analysis

Pair 3 is CORRECT. The Mahadeo or Maadeo Hills form part of the Satpura system in Madhya Pradesh, with Pachmarhi and Dhupgarh on them. Pair 4 is CORRECT. The Mikir Hills, now the Karbi Anglong hills, lie in Assam. Pair 1 is INCORRECT. The Cardamom Hills are the southern end of the Western Ghats in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, on the opposite side of the peninsula from the Coromandel coast. Pair 2 is INCORRECT. The Kaimur Hills are an eastern extension of the Vindhyas across Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, nowhere near the Konkan coast.

How to crack it

Coromandel is the eastern coast and Konkan is the western coast, so the first two pairs can be tested purely on which side of India each hill range lies. Cardamom is unmistakably Western Ghats, so pairing it with the east coast fails at once, and that rejection removes half the options. Fix the coastal names first, Konkan, Malabar, Coromandel and Utkal, because UPSC uses them as the trap element in physiographic matching questions.
