Show answer

Answer: C. 1 and 3 only

Analysis

Pairs 1 and 3 are correctly matched, so the answer is (c) 1 and 3 only.

Statement by statement

Pair 1 is CORRECT. Catalonia is a semi-autonomous region in north-east Spain, in the news over its independence referendum.

Pair 2 is INCORRECT. Crimea was earlier part of Ukraine and is currently under Russian control. It has no connection with Hungary.

Pair 3 is CORRECT. Mindanao is in the Philippines and was in the news for insurgency.

Pair 4 is INCORRECT. Oromia is in Ethiopia, in the news for ethnic clashes, not in Nigeria.

Source

Atlas; The Hindu reports on the Catalonian independence referendum and on unrest in the regions concerned.

How to crack it

Crimea is the easiest of the four to place, and rejecting pair 2 removes options (a) and (d) immediately, leaving a choice decided by Oromia alone. Work a matching set in order of your own confidence rather than the order printed. When following regional unrest in the news, always fix the region to its country, because places in news questions test exactly that link and the distractors are drawn from other countries in the same continent.
