Answer: B. 2 only

Analysis

Only pair 2 is correct, so the answer is (b) 2 only.

Statement by statement

Pair 1 is INCORRECT. The Sanskrit College at Benares was started by Jonathan Duncan in 1791, not by William Jones.

Pair 2 is CORRECT. The Calcutta Madrasa was established by Warren Hastings in 1781, for the study of Muslim law and related subjects.

Pair 3 is INCORRECT. Fort William College was set up by Lord Richard Wellesley in 1800, to train the Company's civil servants in Indian languages and customs. Arthur Wellesley was his brother, later the Duke of Wellington, and a soldier rather than the founder of the college.

How to crack it

Pair 3 uses the sharpest trick available, offering the right surname with the wrong first name. When a familiar surname appears with an unexpected given name, check the individual rather than accepting the family. William Jones is likewise a real figure of the period, founder of the Asiatic Society, so his name is placed here to trade on genuine recognition. Learn founder, institution and year as a triad from the Development of Education chapter.
